The Launch of Leeds Best Bar None was held on Monday 26th March The Electric Press in Millennium Square. The evening began with The Brit Chix who sang, followed by presentations from Superintendent Peter Nicholson (West Yorkshire Police), Andy Constantine (Doncaster Best Bar None), Monica Conlon (Overall winners from last year) and Verity Rushworth (Emmerdale Farm). Sponsors of the event also attended. These included Verity from Radio Aire, Walker Morris Solicitors, Leeds Rhinos and C2 - Carling. The night was a resounding success which led to more than 50 bars signing up for the scheme for 2007.
Ongoing work is being done to improve Best Bar None in Leeds. We have asked students at Leeds Metropolitan University as part of an alcohol and Social Responsibilities course to do a research project and look at what venues like and dislike about the Best Bar None scheme and also why venues didnt want to participate. These are the actions they have been asked to look at:
1. To review the Best Bar None Award - why it has been set up, who it is for, what is involved etc 2. To contact and interview 5 licensees (Independent, Lessee, Tennant, 2x pubco) and investigate why, how, what etc they did to achieved the award, what it means to them, award dinner, PR coverage, confidence, due diligence etc. 3. To contact and interview licensee who did not get involved with the Best Bar None Award to establish why they did not get involved, establish the barriers to getting involved, discuss the positives and ask them to get involved. 4. Write full report outlining the above and making recommendations. A full report will be published in January. In January 10 assessors will be trained on a 2 day course on how to assess for Best Bar None. Leeds Metropolitan University students will also be working with Safer Leeds and assessing venues alongside the trained assessors. Training of assessors has now been completed with 18 assessors trained for the Leeds area. Assessing of bars has now started and will assessments will be carried out up to the end of June. Bars will be contacted a week before for the assessor to make an appointment with them.
