Taxi Marshalling

The key purpose of the Taxi Marshalling Initiative is to provide Taxi Marshalling at three designated points within Leeds City Centre (Leeds Railway Station [ Taxi Rank], Corn Exchange [Call lane Taxi Rank] and adjacent to Oceana [Taxi Rank]) in the run up to Christmas and the New Year as part of a series of measures to reduce alcohol related incidents in Leeds City centre.

There will be 9 Marshalls, 3 at each of the above Taxi Ranks used by Black and White Cabs from 10.00pm - 3.00am on Fridays and Saturdays throughout November and December 2008. Marshalls will also be present at those sites on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. The Marshalls will ensure that members of the public queue up in an orderly fashion, whilst waiting for a Taxi. The Marshalls will ensure effective communication between arriving Taxi's and those waiting at queue to ensure that members of the public access Taxi's at monitored ranks safely and quickly.

The initiative is supported by Safer Leeds, Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police to ensure that members of the public leave the city centre safely after enjoying their night out. Leeds City Councils Taxi & Private Hire Licensingwill be keen to ensure that Taxi's operate within the law.

We have used Taxi Marshalls for the past two years over the Christmas season. No incidents have been reported to the police at the ranks which have been Marshalled over those periods, no incidents have occurred at Marshalled ranks either. Members of the public often comment on how well organised they are and the friendly and helpful nature of Marshalls.

West Yorkshire Police are always at hand if the need should arise to ensure that if any incidents occur, that those are dealt with efficiently and accordingly.
